The American Bulldog was once bred as a working breed. Its closest ancestor is considered to be the English Bulldog, which was specifically used for herding livestock. However, nowadays American Bulldogs are mainly purchased as companion dogs. They get along well with children and are ready to fearlessly protect their owners from any attacks. It is not without reason that these dogs give the impression of calm and intelligent creatures. They have a lot of strength and endurance, which allows them to successfully cope with many tasks, including guarding and helping in hunting.

Varieties

Currently, there are two types of American Bulldog: Johnson (classic type) and Scott (standard type). Dogs that are attributed to the latter variety, because of the peculiarities of the exterior are often confused with American pit bull terriers.

Most often among American Bulldogs you can find a mix of Scott and Johnson. The head of such dogs is slightly smaller in size than the breed standard, but the body is more massive. The mix is called a “hybrid” or “mixed” type and is actually referred to the more powerful Scott variety.

Temperament and Character

American Bulldogs have a very stubborn and willful character. They always want to dominate, so the owners immediately have to explain to the pet his place in the family. Owners should try to be persistent and assertive if they want to bring up a loyal and obedient friend who always does what he is told.

In order for the American Bulldog to grow up friendly, you should familiarize him with strangers from the first months. Dogs of this breed have a strong protective instinct, so their socialization should be treated with special attention. Gradually puppies will learn to distinguish good people from those who pose a threat. And if this is not done, they can grow very aggressive and will try to attack everyone who meets them on the way, because by nature they are reliable defenders, on which you can safely leave not only the house, but also the children.

Cats are a big problem!

It's important for American Bulldog owners to consider that pets of this breed often can't get along with dogs of the same sex. In addition, because of their well-developed hunting instincts, they like to chase running animals, which can be a real problem if there are cats in the house. Only a properly socialized and trained American Bulldog can be kept with other pets.

Care and upbringing

Dogs of this breed feel quite comfortable both in a private house and in a city apartment. The main thing is that there is enough space for them, and the owners go for a walk with the pet in a timely manner. In regions with a warm climate, American bulldogs can even live on the street.

It is desirable for the owners of these dogs to regularly perform with them a certain set of exercises, so that the pets can maintain physical fitness. Without an active lifestyle, the bulldog is likely to become sad and apathetic.

During walks, representatives of this breed can demonstrate the wonders of agility and speed. Owners do not need to be afraid to chase them around the training ground. The heavy but extremely sturdy dogs are a joy to handle.
