American Curls are neat, loyal, and quickly learn the rules of behaviour in the house. Cats of this breed are playful and curious regardless of their age. They do not like loneliness, but do not require constant attention to their person.

History of the breed

In California in 1981, a family of farmers discovered a cat with strange ears bent backwards. Some time later the cat pleased her owners with kittens, two of which were born with exactly the same ears as the mother's. As a result of breeding work to fix this genetic mutation, a new breed was officially registered in 1983.

Breeding

Breeding takes place both by crossing purebred representatives and with the participation of other domestic cats with similar data.

When crossing two Curls, the twisted ears are inherited by almost all kittens. If one of the parents has normal ears, then, as a rule, the trait in question is inherent in only half of the litter.

All kittens of this breed are born with straight ears. Curling begins only on the second to fourth day and sometimes continues until the age of 4 months. By this time it is possible to determine the class of kittens: domestic (pet), breeding (breed) or exhibition (show). A big role in this is played by the degree of inclination of the ears. There are three of them: the first one - they are slightly bent, the second one - the bend is a little more, the third one - the ears are bent crescent-shaped (a sign of a pedigree kitten).

Care

These are healthy and energetic animals, rather unpretentious in care. Semi-long-haired Curls should be combed once a week to remove dead hairs and avoid them from falling off, short-haired Curls can be combed once every few weeks.
