Some dogs are known for their good-natured and gentle disposition, but this is clearly not the case with Dobermans. Many people think of them as aggressive dogs that are always ready to get into a fight or attack strangers. This is because Dobermans were bred to be ideal bodyguards that can serve in the military or police, but not as companions. Nevertheless, in good hands, these dogs become affectionate and obedient.

Breed History

Representatives of this breed were bred by Friedrich Louis Dobermann by 1880, although he began working on the breed around 1860. At first, the bred dogs were called “Thuringian pinscher”. And in 1894, after the death of their creator, the dogs were named “Doberman Pinscher”. In 1949, during the next edition of the standard, the word “pinscher” was removed, leaving just “Doberman”.

Dobermans are characterized by their excellent sense of smell, high intelligence and obedience. They were bred to be ideal service dogs, ready to obey all of their master's commands.

Character Features

The first thing Dobermans demand from their owners is equality. They do not like to be relegated to the second plan in a person's life. Dobermans consider themselves as members of the family, like everyone else. They want to be at the center of things and get very offended if they are not.

Dogs love to patronize the household. They perceive them almost as property, which, above all, must meet the requirements of the Dobermans themselves. And what they consider their own, they protect to the last. This is why Dobermans are known as reliable bodyguards. They believe that they should be vigilant in any situation, but in relation to the household, they are very gentle and kind creatures. Still, it is better not to leave Dobermans alone with small children, as the pets can behave too roughly.

A master with a firm character

Pets are able to subtly feel their owner's mood and try to adjust their behavior to the situation", so they make not only loyal defenders, but also wonderful friends. If the owner inspires respect, they literally fall in love with him, but this attitude must be earned As a rule, Dobermans are attached to a person with a firm character and strong nerves. Any disorganization throws dogs off balance and makes them perceive the owner as a weak-willed creature.

Care and maintenance

Smooth-haired Dobermans do not need any special care. It is enough to comb them once a week with a regular brush to keep their coat in good condition.

The owner of a Doberman will have to invest a lot of effort and time in training, but if successful, he will get a strong and reliable protector, who is always loyal to the family. So this breed is not suitable for those who previously had no experience in raising dogs.

Doberman puppies are prone to mischief and need to be watched regularly. Dogs do not feel comfortable in a small apartment or in a house without a securely fenced area. They need a place to run around without a leash. In urban areas, Dobermans need long walks.
