Breed experts claim that English Setters originated in the UK more than four centuries ago. These friendly and good-natured dogs have long accompanied hunters.

Early written sources name different ancestors who gave rise to this breed.

In some records there are claims that English Setters descended from Spanish Land Spaniels, and in others from Spanish Leghorns, Springer Spaniels and Great Water Spaniels. Nowadays, the exterior of English Setters differs from the original, so it is impossible to say for sure who had a hand in shaping the breed.

History of the breed

The greatest contribution to the development of the breed was made by breeders Edward Laverack and Purcel Lewellyn. It was they who bred the dogs, which are commonly called modern English Setters. As a result of reasonable selection in breeding, they improved the qualities of representatives of the breed as assistants in hunting and companions. Friendly character of English Setters and attractive aristocratic appearance made them universal favorites.

To this day, the breed may be referred to among hunters simply as “Laverack” and “Lueline.” These surnames are quite enough to know what kind of dog we are talking about.
