The smooth-haired Blacks, Bull Terriers, Greyhounds, Tan Terriers and Beagles were all involved in the formation of the smooth-haired Fox Terrier breed. The small, energetic dogs that resulted from the crossbreeding were used mainly for catching rats. In this role, they were valued by people from all walks of life. Farmers needed rodent exterminators, and the rich were fond of fashionable rat-catching competitions. These competitions were usually held in old wooden inns. Dogs were let off their leashes and bets were made as to which of them could kill the most pests in a certain time.

At the dog show, smooth-haired Fox Terriers first appeared in 1862. The breed standard was approved in 1885.
