The Old English hard-haired black-and-tan terrier, the Old White English terrier and the smooth-haired black-and-tan terrier were all involved in the formation of the breed. In addition, the researchers believe that among the ancestors of Fox Terriers there are also Bull Terriers, Spaniels and Beagles, but they did not have a major impact on the breed's exterior. As a result, breeders ended up with a small dog of predominantly white color with spots.

Over time, hard-haired terriers became one of the most popular breeds in Great Britain. At first they participated in shows together with the smooth-haired ones, but in 1872 the breeds were exhibited separately. The first standard dedicated to Fox Terriers was approved in 1913. It has been revised several times since then, but has remained largely the same.

Purpose

The Fox Terriers are excellent as a small hunter and affectionate companion dog. Despite their compact size, they are very hardy and can handle even a superior opponent. This sometimes creates problems, as Fox Terriers tend to be friendly mainly towards people, and often get into fights with other animals. This is largely due to the innate instinct of foxes, because originally they were bred to hunt foxes, badgers and other small game.

Hard-haired Fox Terriers were bred in Great Britain to hunt burrowing animals. Sometimes they were also used to chase wild boars and other game out of thickets.

Character and Temperament

Fox Terriers have many of the characteristics of typical terriers. They are playful, curious, stubborn, bold and quite assertive dogs.

Pets love to spend time together with people. Joint games with the household can make dogs incredibly happy. However, Fox Terriers are quite independent pets and will never fawn over people. They hate hanging around and can make decisions without their owner's commands.

Keeping

Active and agile Foxhounds need regular, long walks. At least an hour should be set aside for exercise, such as jumping, running, swimming, and so on. A short walk along the same route will be ineffective.

Hard-haired Fox Terriers are especially good with children. They adore joint games and pranks.

It is undesirable to keep representatives of this breed with small animals. Foxes have a strong hunting instinct, so they are unlikely to make friends. Only with early socialization puppies will learn to get along with cats and dogs.
