For centuries, Shar-Pei have been bred in the southern provinces of China. They were considered to be lion dogs that would reliably guard the house from intruders. In addition, the pets were used for hunting and herding work.

Many researchers believe that the first representatives of this breed weighed at least 80 kg. This is how they explain the presence of extra folds on the body. Scientists believe that this is an excess of skin, which was formed as dogs of smaller sizes were bred.

The spread of the breed was largely influenced by dog breeders from the United States. They contributed to the revival of the Shar-Pei when they were on the verge of extinction. It was in the USA in 1974 that the official name of the breed was adopted - Chinese Shar-Pei.

Care

A Shar-Pei's coat does not need any special care. It is enough to periodically comb it with a rubber brush or glove to remove dead hairs. The owner also needs to keep the pet's ears clean. During hygienic procedures in no case should not wash his head. If moisture gets into the ears, it can lead to serious problems, since Sharpei have very thin ear canals.

Dogs are bathed about once a month. During bathing procedures, a rubber brush is used to brush the pet's coat to get rid of unwanted hairs.
