Airedale Terriers were bred in the county of Yorkshire in the Aire Valley, but soon spread throughout the UK. These dogs were originally used as skillful and hardy hunting companions.

The tireless Airedale Terriers followed hunters in all kinds of weather. Even in foggy marshes and dense shady thickets, they would pick up the trail, catch the game and bring it back to their master. Over time, Airedale Terriers also became valued as service dogs, sensitive guards and companions. They became vigilant watchmen and protectors.

The breed was officially registered in 1886. The latest version of the standard was approved on March 19, 2009.

Character

Airedale Terriers are highly emotional dogs. They love to socialize with their owners, are confident, fearless and sometimes quite stubborn. They are always alert, but not aggressive. They are ready to get acquainted with strangers, if they do not behave suspiciously.

Airedale Terriers are quite tolerant of children, but it is desirable to teach the younger members of the family in advance how to handle the dog. The pet can cause harm without even wanting to, especially if it becomes annoyed.

At the risk of life

There are many stories of brave Airedales delivering messages, risking their lives under enemy fire during the First World War. The wounded dogs still resorted to headquarters or even sacrificed their lives to save people. They would find wounded soldiers and escort them to the hospital or bring help to those who could not move.

Coat care

Airedale Terriers do not shed their hair themselves, so they do not pollute the apartment. It is easy for owners to pluck it with their hands or with a special trimming tool. It is desirable to have several special brushes with different teeth, in order to make the procedure as painless as possible.

For hygienic purposes, the owner can carry out trimming on his own. This procedure is necessary for the usual renewal of the coat. But for preparation for the exhibition it is better to invite an experienced master, who perfectly owns the tools for trimming and knows how a dog of this breed should look like.

After walks Airedale Terriers need to wipe their paws, the lower part of the muzzle and belly, so that pets do not bring dust, dirt and small leaves into the house. In damp weather, you can even send your dog out for a bath right away. Dogs usually accept water baths without objection.

Training

Representatives of this breed are easy to train. They quickly learn new commands, but can be quite stubborn, so the owner must show firmness and consistency in education. Airedale Terriers first of all strive to take the role of a leader, and only if the owner has instilled in them respect, begin to obey him. Therefore, dogs of this breed is desirable to get those who have already engaged in training. If Airedale Terrier does not see in the owner of a confident and fair person, can become simply uncontrollable. The pet, of course, will love and protect him in its own way, but not recognize him as an authority, then the performance of commands is out of the question.

In any case, Airedale Terrier does not perceive the owner as a leader in the full sense of the word, rather, an equal friend. At the same time, the dog has a good memory, so it will remember punishments even from early puppyhood.
