Mekong Bobtails are friendly, very attached to their owners, active and playful. They do not tolerate loneliness, prefer to be in company, but are not overly intrusive. They have a low, soft voice, like to "talk" with the owner.

History of the breed

The breed originated spontaneously, under the influence of the short-tail gene, common among Asian cats. The name of the breed comes from the Mekong River, which flows on the Indochina peninsula. This name was adopted only in 2003 in order not to confuse Siamese, Thai cats and Bobtails. The breed standard was officially approved in 2004.

According to legend, Mekong bobtails lived only in the noble families of Siam. Traditionally, they accompanied rich heiresses on walks. Siamese girls used to put their rings on the curled tails of Mekong bobtails during bathing to avoid losing them.

Care

Mekong bobtails are short-haired cats. Their fur does not require any special care. It is necessary to comb out the pet about once a week, wash it as it gets dirty, trim the claws regularly.

Breeding

The breed standard allows any point colors without white spots, eye color - blue, other shades are considered a marriage. The defects of the breed include the complete absence of a tail and a straight tail. The short-tail gene, like in other bobtails, is recessive. It is impossible to get a short-tailed cat in the first generation when crossing with a long-tailed cat. Currently, crossbreeding of the Mekong Bobtail with other breeds is prohibited by the standard.
