For centuries Belgian monks have bred loyal and reliable Bloodhounds. The first mention of this breed can be found in the sources of the XIII century. Its representatives were used as service dogs to protect property and search for criminals.

It is not uncommon to send faster hounds on the trail already taken by the Bloodhounds.

The remarkable sense of these dogs allows them to successfully find not only game, but also lost people, criminals or lost pets. Nowadays they often work together with border guards, search and rescue teams. Thanks to their good-natured disposition and good manners, Bloodhounds are increasingly being acquired as companion dogs.

Temperament and Character

Despite their large size, Bloodhounds are often shy, timid and very sensitive. However, this does not prevent them from being willful and stubborn with their owners, so owners will need to be firm in their training, but never cold or cruel.

Bloodhounds are very calm. They almost never show anger or aggression. They are tireless workers who are ready to spend hours sniffing the territory that interests them. However, they are practically not used as guards, as they would rather befriend an intruder than drive him away.

Representatives of this breed feel much more comfortable outside the city, where they can walk freely and explore the world around them. Usually they get along well with animals, but can show aggression towards other dogs of the same sex.

Bloodhounds need an experienced dog handler with a determined and patient character. Behind such a person these intelligent and loyal dogs are ready to follow, anywhere. And with the right training and education, they become simply wonderful pets.

Always on the lookout

When walking, Bloodhounds are eager to explore unfamiliar places, so it is best to keep them on a leash, otherwise they can easily get lost chasing an interesting scent. In this case, the dog will not leave his occupation until he studies the trail to the end, wherever it led him.

In addition, Bloodhounds are eager to swallow any little thing that seems interesting to them, so the owner should always be on the lookout. If the dog grabs something and starts chewing, it is a serious cause for concern.
