Large Munsterlanders appeared in the early 20th century in the German city of Munster. The first breed standard was adopted in 1936.

The breed was formed as a result of crossing of langhaars and spaniels. There is its close relative - the small Munsterlander. In appearance and features of character, they are very similar. Large Munsterlanders are especially popular in France. Local hunters appreciate their loyalty, excellent instinct, large strong jaws, vigor and firm stand.

Today, Large Munsterlanders are bred mainly in Germany, France and Scandinavia.

History of the breed

The breed was developed in Germany from the German long-haired lapdog. Black and peige puppies stubbornly appeared in the litter of langhaars, despite the efforts of German dog breeders. For a long time they were culled and bred only by gamekeepers and hunters who do not care about non-compliance with the standard.

The owners mainly developed the working qualities of the dogs, which were later called large Munsterlanders. As time passed, it turned out that they could be not only hunters, but also shepherds, as well as sensitive and vigilant watchdogs.

The Large Munsterlander is a loyal friend and an intelligent hunting assistant. Dogs of this breed are very affectionate and easily learn new commands. They get along well in a city apartment, but they love free walks in the open. The pets feel best outside the city, where they can show themselves sufficiently.

Care and maintenance

As far as care is concerned, large Munsterlanders are very unpretentious. They tolerate all weather conditions well and can live in the yard, but without timely socialization can be dangerous to small pets, especially birds.

During training, the owner needs to be strict and persistent with the dog, only then he will get what he wants.
