The Biardid Collie (Bearded Collie) is a shepherd dog breed bred in Great Britain. The main distinguishing feature of its representatives is a thick long hair, forming a kind of beard on the muzzle.

They are happy to take interesting and long walks in any weather. If the pet does not find an outlet for the accumulated energy, it may have undesirable behavioral abnormalities.

Temperament and Character

Bearded Collies are very playful dogs. They love to chase a ball or a plastic plate, fetch a bone or a stick. Running around in the open or lying in the grass are favorite activities of pets, if, of course, it is allowed by the owner.

Representatives of this breed are excellent companions for people who prefer an active lifestyle. Dogs like daily exercise, including regular jogging.

Provided sufficient exercise, biardid collies adapt well to life in the city or countryside.

Bearded Collies are excellent with children. These dogs are very patient and never show aggression without a reason.

Care and maintenance

The owner of a bearded Collie has to worry about the coat. It can get tangled in tangles, so you have to comb the pet thoroughly, at least 2 times a week. Wool is not trimmed in any case. It should be thick and long enough to provide natural protection for the dog.

Dogs of this breed lend themselves well to training and are friendly even with strangers.

Breed History

Biardid Collies have lived in Scotland for centuries. These dogs were especially valued by shepherds for their stamina and excellent herding abilities. Appearance was not important. Mainly, bearded collies were selected for their working qualities. They were called different names: “Scottish Bearded Collie”, “Gurtschiks' dog”, “Cosmaty Collie” and so on.

The breed was never specially bred. Bearded collie appeared as they are, under the influence of natural factors. That's why it is not thoroughly known what dogs took part in the formation of the breed. Some experts believe that in the crossbreeding did not do without Russian shaggy sheepdogs, which in the Middle Ages traveled to European countries together with cattle. In addition, scientists believe that Old English sheepdogs were involved in the formation of the breed.

Under their modern name, bearded collies were first mentioned in 1891 in “The Dog of Scotland” by D. J. Thomson Gray. At that time they were not particularly widespread, but already participated in exhibitions.

The breed was officially recognized in 1897 during the exhibition in Edinburgh. The first biardid collie standard, developed by X. Panmure Gordon, was in force for almost 60 years. The modern version differs only by minor amendments.

As a born shepherd, the Biardid Collie loves it when family members get together and keeps a close eye on each of them during walks.

Health

This breed is generally in good health. Nevertheless, there are sometimes cases of hip dysplasia. This is hereditary, so future owners should ask the breeder if the parents of the puppy suffered from this disease.

Bearded collies are also susceptible to Addison's disease. With careful attention, this problem can be detected at an early stage. In rare cases, pets suffer from allergies to certain foods.
