The popularity of West Siberian huskies is due not only to their natural beauty, but also to their excellent working qualities. They are strong and hardy dogs that feel comfortable even in very harsh conditions. West Siberian huskies equally well tolerate severe cold and heat. This is largely why they are so common in Europe and the United States.

History of the breed

The origin of West Siberian huskies is closely connected with the taiga regions of Russia. The breed was bred by hunters mainly from two local varieties of dogs, the Mansi and Khanty huskies.

Initially, West Siberian huskies helped hunters and shepherds, were faithful watchmen and companions. To this day in some areas of Siberia there are still aboriginal groups of dogs of this breed.

The first temporary standard of the breed was approved in 1949. It was approved by the Cynological Council of the Main Directorate of Hunting in 1952.

Natural born hunters

West Siberian huskies are often used to hunt moose, bear and deer. They are good at tracking animals by scent, holding the animal and barking until the owner arrives.

Care and maintenance

West Siberian huskies are very unpretentious in care. They tolerate even a lack of food. Nevertheless, the owner should prepare in advance for the fact that during the period of shedding the pet will have to be regularly combed out, so that the hair does not tangle.

The West Siberian husky likes long walks, which is why it feels much better in the yard of a private house than in an apartment. The pet can be kept on a chain, it perfectly tolerates even the harshest weather conditions, provided a comfortable box.

During walks, it is desirable to look for places where the dog can safely run without a leash. Laikas are usually very sociable, so it is necessary to exclude unwanted contacts if possible.

Representatives of this breed are characterized by good health. They rarely have genetic diseases and do not require frequent visits to the veterinarian.

By the way

You have to come up with a suitable activity for barkers. If they are bored, they are prone to destructive behavior.

Character Features

West Siberian Huskies are usually very independent. They rarely show aggression and always do not mind socializing with the household.

Siberian Husky are wary of strangers, because they are vigilant guards who always take care of the owner. Nevertheless, with proper socialization, a puppy can be taught to socialize with strangers.

West Siberian huskies are friendly to children. They are tireless babysitters and playmates.

Choosing a puppy

West Siberian huskies are valued primarily for their working qualities, but even if you are getting a pet simply as a companion, it is advisable to get one no earlier than one month of age. The puppy should be strong, moderately well-fed and mobile.

For hunters looking for a strong-willed companion, the most stubborn dog in the litter will do. Just place the puppies a little away from the mother, and the most vigorous puppy will find its way to her first.

Husky puppies need early socialization or they may behave aggressively with other pets.
