The Norwegian Forest Cat is the epitome of power and beauty. Its appearance is something between a lynx and a wild cat. It is a calm, unruffled and affectionate cat, characterized by impeccable manners and restraint. It bravely explores new places and environments, is an excellent hunter, active, but at the same time does not impose its society on anyone.

History of the breed

Norwegians are an aboriginal breed that appeared a very long time ago. There are several versions of its origin. According to one of them, it is the descendants of the Turkish Angora, brought by the Vikings to Scandinavia in the XVI century. According to another - Norwegian forest is the result of mutation of a wild cat. In the middle of the XX century, due to spontaneous crossbreeding with short-haired cats, the Norwegian was close to extinction. Felinologists made a lot of efforts to preserve the breed. It was officially recognized in 1977.

Norwegian Forest cats are the only cats that can climb down the trunk of a tree head down in a spiral trajectory.

Care

Norwegians are considered to be an unpretentious breed. However, it should be remembered that they are semi-long-haired cats and should be combed out regularly. It is also necessary to purchase a scratching post. This is a healthy breed, but there is a genetic predisposition to glycogenosis (defects in enzymes responsible for glycogen metabolism and causing cirrhosis of the liver).

Breeding

The standard allows any colors of animals, except point colors.Disadvantages of the breed are dry ruffled coat, round head, short tail or too graceful build. The Norwegian Forest Dog reaches maturity late - by four to five years of age, and only from this age it is ready to breed.
