The Pekingese, or Peking Palace Dog, is one of the oldest breeds on Earth. It is believed that the first representatives of this breed appeared in China more than 2000 years ago. Named in honor of the Chinese capital, for many centuries Pekingese enjoyed special honor at the court of the Chinese emperors: the appearance of dogs of this breed heralded the appearance of the emperor at a solemn ceremony. Only members of the imperial family could enjoy socializing with these carefully guarded little dogs.

Pekingese came to Europe after the capture of the imperial palace in Beijing in 1860, when British soldiers brought home five dogs of this breed as a trophy. Pekingese were presented to Queen Victoria, thus starting the development of the English line of the breed.

Characteristics of the breed

Unruffled, unobtrusive, extremely self-confident and independent dog, which constantly demonstrates its independence and ability to control the situation. It is obedient and loyal to the owner, but this behavior of the Pekingese is the result of early education and proper socialization. If handled roughly, they quickly turn into stubborn and unruly dogs. Pekingese are very friendly to all members of the family, but are quite wary of strangers. In general, Pekingese are in pretty good health. The vulnerable point of this breed is the eyes, so special attention should be paid to them.

The color of the Pekingese can be any, but preference is given to dogs with clean and bright colors.

Maintenance and Care

The Pekingese's luxurious coat requires regular grooming. Long coats of show dogs should be brushed daily, while for dogs whose owners prefer a short haircut for their pets, grooming consists of regular trimming and washing. It is also important to periodically check the condition of the eyes and skin folds on the dog's muzzle.
