Many believe that the Pharaoh Hounds are the closest relatives of the ancient dogs that accompanied the rulers of Egypt on the hunt. The similarity between them is obvious, but so far this version has not been proven.

Officially, the birthplace of Pharaoh Hounds is Malta. Phoenician traders brought here the ancestors of the breed about 2000 years ago. At that time on the territory of Malta were popular their hunting dogs, which are very similar to Pharaoh dogs. Crossbreeding happened by chance, so it is still unknown for sure whose genes dominate in the modern dogs.

The first mention of the breed dates back to 1647, but up until the 20th century it was only known to locals. The dogs helped farmers and hunters, who valued mainly the working qualities of the pets and did not think about dog shows. Only in the 1920s representatives of this breed were brought to Europe, and the modern name was given to them by the British. Pharaoh Hounds were officially registered in 1977.

Character Features

Pharaoh dogs quickly become attached to their owners. Pets are not afraid to show care and affection. They can be wary of strangers, but will never show aggression without reason. A sharp mind and independence allow dogs to quickly assess the situation and act even without the owner's commands. However, this peculiarity has another side. If the pet decides that the owner commands incorrectly, it will not obey.
