The first mention of this ancient Chinese breed of ornamental miniature dogs dates back to the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. 220 A.D.). Thus, early Chinese manuscripts mention “square, low dogs with a short muzzle”. At that time, pugs did not yet have such deep wrinkles, but the distinct pattern of folds on the forehead was already showing and was similar to the character for a ruler. That is why the wrinkles on the forehead of the pug were called the ruler's mark and special attention was paid to it when breeding dogs. Thanks to the development of trade relations at the end of XV beginning of XVI century the first pugs got to Europe together with Dutch traders and sailors. It was in Holland that these dogs received the name “pugshond” “grumpy dog”, which has survived to this day, although in the shortened form “pug”.

Pugs suffer from a specific disease called chronic corneal erosion, which is why the eye condition of this breed needs a lot of attention.
