The first representatives of the breed were bred in Germany. They are the largest dogs of the schnauzer group, as evidenced by the prefix “Riesen”, which translates as “giant”.

The breed began to be bred in the early 19th century as a higher, more robust and stronger variation of the Mittel Schnauzer. For this purpose, dog breeders took medium schnauzers as a basis and crossed them with dogs, sheepdogs and some herding dogs. The result was animals that bear an external resemblance to Mittelschnauzers, but are much larger. The dog breeders were successful and got a brave, strong and highly intelligent dog.

Purpose

Riesenschnauzers are often used as guards, service dogs and companions. It is a reliable watchman who will not let strangers into the territory, but since its education and care require a lot of effort, it is recommended to have this pet only experienced owners.

Riesenschnauzers became helpers of shepherds. They coped with this task so well that later people began to develop other working qualities of the breed.
