Selkirk Rex (Selkirk Rex) are very affectionate cats. However, they cannot be called compulsive. They easily get along with any animals in the house. If necessary, cats will quietly stay alone.

History of the breed

In 1987, a cat with thick curly hair was discovered in Wyoming. It was crossed with a purebred black Persian, resulting in three kittens with the same curly coat. The breed was officially recognized only in 1992. In Russia, the first Selkirks appeared in the 1990s. At the moment it is one of the youngest breeds, which is still in the process of formation.

Care

Selkirks are unpretentious in terms of care. It is necessary to comb the curls once a week. Otherwise, there are recommendations common to the care of all cats: nail clipping, balanced diet, attention and care.

The character of the Selkirk combines the best qualities of all cats that were used in the creation of the breed: stable psyche and excellent health they have acquired from pedigree ancestors, intelligence - from the British, imperturbability and calmness - from Persians.

Breeding

The curl gene in the Selkirk Rex is dominant. This means that straight-haired kittens born to curly parents do not possess this gene. A cat or cat with curly hair is usually crossed with Persians, Exotics or Brits, as the breed is in its infancy.
