The breed's country of origin is Australia, where the Australian Terrier was bred at the end of the 19th century by crossing the Yorkshire Terrier with the local Terrier.

Australian Terriers were bred in the 19th century. Unfortunately, it is not currently known which breeds were used for crossbreeding.
