Some dog breeders believe that the first representatives of the Welsh Corgi Pembroke breed were brought to Great Britain by the Vikings. At least, archaeological findings indicate that these dogs were already living at least in the 10th century.

Up until the 20th century, the Pembroke and Cardigan were considered to be one breed. Only in 1934 each type had its own standard.
