There are at least two known points of view about the origin of French spaniels. According to one of them, they first appeared in Spain, which is indicated by the second name of the breed spaniel. Then around the XVII century they were brought to France, where the dogs became very popular. According to another version, French spaniels were bred in Scandinavia.

Both versions have the right to exist, as there is no reliable information about the origin of the breed. Researchers can only assume for sure that the breed was bred by long-haired setters. In addition, the similarity of its representatives with the French Braque is obvious. They were most widespread in France, so officially these spaniels are considered French.

Originally, the dogs were used as helpers for hunting birds. In this capacity, French spaniels demonstrate confident search, accurate execution of commands and courage. It is known that as hunters they were kept in 1512 at the court of Louis XII. But with time English breeds became more popular, and French spaniels practically disappeared. Only in the XIX century interest to them revived, largely due to the fact that these dogs were eventually able to breed people of middle classes, not only aristocrats.

In our time, representatives of the breed are very popular in France. They are kept as strong hunters and good-natured companions. Dogs show themselves well in other areas. For example, they can work in rescue and social services. Endurance, balanced character, loyalty and sensitivity of French Spaniels are appreciated by many dog breeders.
