There are at least two known points of view about the origin of French spaniels. According to one of them, they first appeared in Spain, which is indicated by the second name of the breed spaniel.

The breed originated from the English Bulldogs. The stocky French dogs inherited from them a balanced character and the ability to hold themselves with dignity in any situation.

The first known mention of small dogs of white color with long curly hair living on the Mediterranean coast dates back to the XIII XIV centuries.
