These breeds of dogs were originally used to guard herds of sheep and cows, as well as houses and castles. Some (e.g. St. Bernards, for example, accompanied monks on their journeys and warned them of avalanches. Later were involved in hunting wild boars and hauling food carts.
Features:
- Calm, patient, attentive and affectionate.
- Cautious and suspicious, but willing to protect family members.
- Dislikes strangers and invasion of privacy.
- Appreciate affection and are eager to spend time with their owners.
- Prone to lying down.
